Trail Blazers’ Damian Lillard leads All-Rookie team

Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard was the only unanimous selection for the NBA All-Rookie first team, the league announced Tuesday.

Lillard, also a unanimous pick for rookie of the year, was joined on the first team by New Orleans forward Anthony Davis, Cleveland guard Dion Waiters, Washington guard Bradley Beal and Golden State forward Harrison Barnes.

Lillard, the sixth overall pick in last June’s draft from Weber State, led all rookies with a 19-point scoring average. He also averaged 6.1 assists and 3.1 rebounds, playing in all 82 games this season.

UCLA might lose key player for season

UCLA defensive end Owamagbe Odighizuwa could sit out the 2013 season after having surgery on his right hip Tuesday.

Odighizuwa, who will be a junior this fall, underwent surgery on his left hip during the off-season and did not participate in spring practice. He started having pain in his right hip before spring practice.

The loss would be significant, as Odighizuwa is ticketed to replace Datone Jones at defensive end.

UCLA cornerback Marcus Rios received good news in the last week: He will not need more surgery for a fungus infection in his sinus area.

Rios has undergone six surgeries since October. However, doctors believe antibiotics are dealing with the issue.

There is a slim chance that Rios could return during the 2013 season. He played in nine games as a freshman last season.

Peter Sagan of Slovakia sprinted to the Stage 3 win and Colombian Javier Acevedo maintained the race lead as strong winds replaced the heat in the Tour of California.

Sagan completed the 110.3-mile Palmdale-to-Santa Clarita leg of the road race in 4 hours 20 minutes 31 seconds. Acevedo leads American Tejay van Garderen by 12 seconds with five stages left.

The Dallas Stars fired Coach Glen Gulutzan, an expected move by new General Manager Jim Nill for a franchise that has missed the playoffs a record five straight seasons.

The 41-year-old Gulutzan had the Stars in playoff contention both seasons, but Dallas faltered down the stretch each time. The Stars were 64-57-9 under Gulutzan, including 22-22-4 this season.

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer appear back on track after early losses in Madrid last week. Serena Williams, meanwhile, is maintaining her dominance.

Top-ranked Djokovic cruised past Spanish qualifier Albert Montanes, 6-2, 6-3, and second-seeded Federer routed Italian wild card Potito Starace, 6-1, 6-2, to reach the third round of the Italian Open at Rome.

In the women’s tournament, the top-ranked Williams brushed aside Laura Robson, 6-2, 6-2.

Hawaii’s athletic department is scrapping a plan to drop the word “Rainbow” from its men’s teams’ nicknames.

The university announced it is changing its football, baseball and other men’s team nicknames to the Rainbow Warriors, a name previously used by the football team but dropped in 2000.

The changes take effect July 1. All Hawaii’s women’s teams will continue to be known as the Rainbow Wahine. “Wahine” means “woman” in Hawaiian.

Chuck Muncie, a Pro Bowl running back with the New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers, died at age 60, the NFL clubs and a family spokesman said.
