For Dallas Cowboys’ Shaun Suisham, revenge might kick in

Revenge is best served cold. But hey, warm isn’t so bad either.

Dallas kicker Shaun Suisham has a chance to exact some tonight when the Cowboys play at Washington, a team that cut him earlier this month.

In a strange twist of synchronicity, Suisham was released by the Redskins after blowing a short field goal against New Orleans. And this week, he was signed by the Cowboys -- a team he once played for -- after the final straw with former Dallas kicker Nick Folk: also a blown chip shot against New Orleans.

“It’s a bit of a surprise,” Suisham told reporters after being signed. “If you would have asked a month ago would I have thought I’d be in this situation, no. . . . Man, I’m so excited to be back here in Dallas.”

Signed by Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent in 2005, Suisham wound up kicking for the Cowboys in three games that season, and three more in 2006. He made four of six attempts over that span -- and was released four times.

Eventually, late in the 2006 season, he signed with the rival Redskins and found some stability. He made 81 of 101 field goals in three-plus seasons. Folk, meanwhile, made the Pro Bowl in 2007 and seemed to be on solid ground. Things fell apart this season, as the Cowboys made just 64% of their field goal attempts, 31st in the league. Folk missed an NFL-high 10 of those.

So in stepped Suisham, who missed just three of his 21 field-goal attempts this season -- two against the Cowboys, and a 23-yarder at the end of a would-be upset of the Saints.

“Unfortunately, I missed three field goals,” he said. “There isn’t anybody out there who’s perfect. I feel like I should be. But I certainly am not hanging my head or lacking in confidence because I missed a few kicks this year.”

Now he’s got a chance to do something amazing: face the team that kicked him to the curb -- and kick back.
