UFC’s Jon Jones, Daniel Cormier fight onstage weeks before their bout

Well, this clinches a larger audience for Tuesday’s UFC 178 public appearance in Los Angeles by Ultimate Fighting Championship light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and his unbeaten Sept. 27 challenger Daniel Cormier.

In Las Vegas on Monday, at a face-off onstage after the fighters met with reporters and fans, Jones (20-1) leaned his head onto Cormier’s forehead, drew a shove and responded by charging the challenger, throwing a left hand as those close by and the promotional backboard on the stage fell by the wayside.

Jones, who was later pulled from atop Cormier after being seen throwing at least two more punches inside the MGM Grand lobby, stood on the platform to roar, “Yeah! Yeah!”

Fight on.

Jones, Cormier and the main undercard fighters, featherweight contenders Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier, are scheduled to appear at Club Nokia at L.A. Live Tuesday at 4 p.m. to promote the MGM Grand fight card.

“Press tour still on. Just need more security,” a UFC spokesman told The Times by text message Monday.

Jones was supposed to fight top contender Alexander Gustafsson Sept. 27 at MGM Grand, but Gustafsson suffered a knee injury in training, leading to San Jose’s Cormier stepping in after previously flinging a volume of trash talk toward Jones.

Cormier has defeated the likes of veterans Dan Henderson, Josh Barnett, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Frank Mir.

Tickets go on sale Friday.
