Tiger Woods roars into World Challenge lead with a 62

Tiger Woods and the other 17 players in Woods’ charity tournament had to wait an extra hour to tee off Friday because of morning frost at Sherwood Country Club.

Woods said he also “didn’t warm up well” when he was practicing on the driving range. “I was not hitting it very good.”

But that all changed on the course, where Woods got hot in a hurry and showed why he’s the world’s top-ranked player and a five-time winner of his event.

Woods fired a 10-under-par 62, tying his tournament record, to surge into the second-round lead of the Northwestern Mutual World Challenge. He was at 11-under 133 overall.

First-round leader Zach Johnson was second, two shots behind Woods, after shooting a four-under 68 that included a birdie on the 18th hole.

“Amazing what Tiger did out there,” Johnson said. “It’s just some incredible golf.”

Matt Kuchar (68) was third at eight under, followed by defending champion Graeme McDowell (67) at five under and Bubba Watson (70) at four under par.

“I kind of felt sorry for Graeme McDowell,” who played with Woods, Kuchar said. “I saw [McDowell] posted a five-under-par round, and it must have felt like it was two or three over” compared with Woods’ round.

Woods birdied the first two holes on his way to 10 birdies overall — including on four of Sherwood’s five par-five holes — and no bogeys.

“I left myself in some good spots, and that was key,” Woods said.

“I only had a couple of downhill putts that I had to make, but the majority of my putts were uphill, where I had the ability to take a run at it. My putts really weren’t that difficult to make.”

This is the 15th edition of the tournament, which benefits the Tiger Woods Foundation. It will move to Florida next year. The purse is $3.5 million, with $1 million to the winner.

Woods set the record of 62 in the second round in 2007 on his way to winning by a record seven shots.

On Friday, Woods said there were “some really tricky pins” in terms of placement on the greens. But 11 players were under par Friday compared with only five Thursday.

Watson was one of them with his two-under 70, but the former Masters champion had a roller-coaster round.

After jumping into contention with three birdies and an eagle on the first six holes, Watson bogeyed the par-four seventh and made double bogey on the par-three eighth after an errant tee shot.

Watson then had two birdies and two more bogeys on the back nine.
