Arrest made in shooting death of Wayne Ellington Jr.’s father

On Thursday, Philadelphia police arrested the man believed to have killed Wayne Ellington Sr., 57, father of Lakers guard Wayne Ellington Jr.

According to the Associated Press, 34-year old Philadelphia resident Carl White has been charged with murder.

Ellington Sr. was shot in the head on Nov. 9 and found in the driver’s seat of a 2001 Oldsmobile in Philadelphia. He was pronounced dead almost three hours later at a local hospital.

His son learned of the death after the Lakers’ first victory of the season, over the Charlotte Hornets at Staples Center.

Ellington Jr. took a leave of absence to be with his family, but has since returned to the team.

“Our players are upset for their friend and teammate,” said Lakers General Manager Mitch Kupchak in a statement, after the team initially heard the news. “Additionally, ownership and all Lakers employees are also saddened by this tragedy. Those of us who work with and have gotten to know Wayne have come to know what a wonderful and caring person he is.”
