Mike Penberthy, a member of the Lakers’ 2000-01 NBA championship team, has joined the Minnesota Timberwolves as the team’s shooting coach.

Penberthy appeared in 53 games for the Lakers during the 2000-01 season. The 6-foot-3 guard from Master’s College averaged 16.1 minutes and 5.0 points a game while shooting 39.6% from three-point range and 90.3% from the free-throw line.

A victim of the luxury tax, Penberthy was cut loose in November of his second season.

After his stint with the Lakers, Penberthy played overseas in Italy and Germany. Most recently he joined the ABA’s Los Angeles Slam (2011-12).

The Timberwolves continue to rebuild after trading All-Star forward Kevin Love to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Penberthy will be charged with helping players like Ricky Rubio, Andrew Wiggins and Zach LaVine with their shooting.
