Ryan Tannehill stood on the practice field Wednesday wearing a cap, T-shirt and knee brace, idly spinning a ball in his hands as he watched teammate Matt Moore throw.

That’s how Tannehill is preparing for the Miami Dolphins’ playoff game Sunday at Pittsburgh , where he will also probably be a spectator.

The Dolphins’ No. 1 quarterback sat out practice Wednesday, making it unlikely he’ll return from a sprained left knee for the team’s first postseason game since 2008.

“We may run out of time this week,” Coach Adam Gase said.

Tannehill has missed the past three games. Moore, who is 2-1 as Tannehill’s replacement, will make his first career postseason start “unless something changes drastically here in the next two days or three days,” Gase said.

However, Gase said Tannehill’s knee improves a little every day, and it’s still possible Tannehill will practice this week. One workout — even Friday — might be enough to clear him for the game, Gase said.

Caldwell’s job is safe

After leading the Detroit Lions to the playoffs two times in the last three years, Jim Caldwell will return for a fourth season as head coach.

The Lions said Wednesday morning that Caldwell’s job is not in jeopardy once the season ends. He is 27-21 with the Lions after going 26-22 with Indianapolis from 2009-11.

The Lions play the Seattle Seahawks in a wild-card game Saturday.

Concussion update

Green Bay’s Quinten Rollins has been placed in the concussion protocol following his scary injury in the victory last week over Detroit, and fellow Packers cornerback Damarious Randall practiced Wednesday.

Randall’s status provided a bit of good news for the team’s battered secondary ahead of the NFC playoff game Sunday against the New York Giants and their talented receiving corps, led by Odell Beckham Jr.

Rollins was carted off with a neck injury in the second half against the Lions after tumbling out of bounds on the sideline. Randall, who already was bothered by a shoulder injury, hurt his knee in the game.

‘Pacman’ responds

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones said that he regretted a hotel scuffle that landed him in jail but insisted that he didn’t deserve to be arrested in his latest legal issue during an often-tumultuous pro football career.

“I’m sorry that this happened,” Jones told reporters as he left the Hamilton County Jail, more than 32 hours after he was booked on four charges. He said that it’d be different if he had beaten people up, but that all he did was touch someone. “Obviously if you read into it, none of this makes sense,” Jones said. “We’re going to see how it goes and I’m more than eager that this will be dismissed pretty soon.”
