London Olympics: Shooter Kim Rhode makes U.S. Olympic history

LONDON -- Shooter Kim Rhode became the first American to win individual medals at five consecutive Olympics with a sensational display in women’s skeet, hitting 99 of 100 targets.

The El Monte resident celebrated the gold-medal moment with a bright smile and a fist pump. Her performance Sunday tied a world record. Wei Ning of China came in second, hitting 91 of the 100 targets.

Rhode’s streak started at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, where she won gold, then bronze in Sydney, gold in Athens and silver in Beijing.

Just call it the drive for five.

Rhode’s score was also an Olympic record.
