Ravens’ Brendon Ayanbadejo calls Patriots’ offense a gimmick

Brendon Ayanbadejo put his foot in his mouth Sunday ... or whatever the modern-day equivalent is when someone types something without thinking it through and then sends it out for the world to see via Twitter.

In the case of the Baltimore special teams player, it was bad enough that folks in New England saw his since-deleted bit of trash talking he sent out regarding the Patriots, who will face the Ravens on Sunday in the AFC championship.

“Are you watching the game pats vs texans?” Ayanbadejo tweeted during the New England-Houston divisional playoff game. “If so you see the hurry snap offense catch em b4 they set up. It’s a gimmick. Their offense is good enough to be successful with out that. ...”

Ayanbadejo mocked the fact that the Patriots played a hurry-up offense “in a sport that is predicated on mano y mano” and also brought up other incidents from the team’s past, including the spygate scandal.

Oddly enough, the former UCLA Bruin didn’t mention something else in recent New England football history, a 23-20 victory over the Ravens in last year’s AFC championship.

Of course, Patriots fans were all over Ayanbadejo on Twitter for his comments. And Mike Freeman of CBS Sports wrote that a source from the team told him that the players are privately furious, not so much about the knock on their offense but mainly about the rehashing of spygate.

Ayanbadejo ate his words (or whatever the Twitter equivalent would be) on Monday morning, tweeting, “I made selfish comments on twitter last night that reflected poorly upon myself, my teammates, and the organization. For that I apologize.”

Might be too little, too late as far as the Patriots are concerned.
