In the wake of the 2014 Sochi Wiinter Games -- where gay rights in sports became an issue -- Robert Redford’s Sundance Productions is working on a documentary that chronicles the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender athletes.

Retired figure skater Johnny Weir will serve as the host of “To Russia with Love,” which is scheduled to air on EPIX this fall.

The film continues a discussion that heated up last winter when a Russian anti-gay propaganda law drew widespread criticism leading up to the Games.

Weir was in Sochi as a television commentator and saw the media question gay athletes about the law repeatedly. The film will include interviews with speed skater Blake Skjellerup, hockey player Charline Labonte and snowboarder Belle Brockhoff, among others.

NBA player Jason Collins, diver Greg Louganis and tennis great Billie Jean King, who was named to the U.S. delegation in Sochi, are also part of the film.

“As gay athletes’ fight for equality continues to gain momentum, EPIX is proud to provide a platform for this important global conversation,” said Mark Greenberg, EPIX president and chief executive.
