FedEx Cup: Henrik Stenson feels confident; Tiger Woods not so much

Henrik Stenson has almost two weeks to enjoy his newfound position as the top player in the FedEx Cup standings.

And Tiger Woods has almost two weeks to get the train back on the tracks.

Following the Deutsche Bank Championship, which Stenson won on Monday, the FedEx Cup playoffs take a break before resuming with the BMW Championship in Lake Forest, Ill., on Sept. 12.

It doesn’t seem that Stenson will waste any of that free time looking over his shoulder.

“I’ve always been a pretty good front-runner,” he said. “I’ve always liked to think that the other guy is going to have to play better than I do if I’m in the lead.”

The Swedish player’s victory, which capped a series of close misses in big tournament’s this season, assures him his first trip to the Tour Championship with its $10-million prize. Woods is also a lock for the playoff finale.

But Woods can’t be feeling great after tying for 65th place over the holiday weekend and losing his grip on No. 1 in the playoff standings. Given his shaky performance on the greens at TPC Boston, he might be looking at some extended putting practice.

“It wasn’t my week,” he said. “I didn’t play well and didn’t make anything.”
