Chip Ganassi Racing Teams said Friday it signed Ryan Briscoe to drive its No. 8 car next year in the IndyCar Series.

Ganassi also said veteran Tony Kanaan would take over its No. 10 car for Dario Franchitti, who announced last month he was retiring from competition.

Briscoe, 32, drove for Ganassi in 2005 and then spent several years with Team Penske. This year he again drove for Ganassi in the Indianapolis 500 in May and finished 12th.

Briscoe overall has seven IndyCar victories in 111 starts over eight seasons.

“We built some great chemistry during the month of May this year with the whole crew,” Briscoe said in a statement. “I couldn’t be happier right now.”

Ganassi announced in October that it had hired Kanaan, 38, who won this year’s Indianapolis 500.

Kanaan originally was to drive Ganassi’s No. 8 car, but he’ll now move to the No. 10 car because of Franchitti’s retirement.

Franchitti, a four-time IndyCar champion, said last month he would no longer race after suffering head and spinal injuries in an Oct. 6 crash in an IndyCar race in Houston.

Ganassi’s two other IndyCar drivers are Scott Dixon, who won this year’s series championship, and Charlie Kimball.
