Marcos Ambrose wins pole for NASCAR race at Watkins Glen
Marcos Ambrose continued to show his mastery of the curvy road course in Watkins Glen, N.Y., by winning the pole position for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race.
Ambrose, who has won the last two Cup races at Watkins Glen International -- the Australian’s only victories in the series -- turned a lap of 128.241 mph in his Ford on Saturday to capture the first starting spot.
“I’ve never had a pole position here, so I dug deep and put down a solid lap and it was enough,” Ambrose, 36, told reporters at the track. “It’s a very special moment for me.”
Clint Bowyer qualified second, Martin Truex Jr. was third and A.J. Allmendinger will start fourth.
Max Papis, who’s filling in for the injured Tony Stewart this weekend, qualified 29th in the 43-car field in Stewart’s No. 14 Chevrolet.
Stewart suffered a broken right leg in a sprint-car race Monday in Iowa. Stewart, a three-time Cup champion, is out indefinitely after two surgeries to repair the leg.
Among other notable drivers, Kyle Busch qualified fifth, Jimmie Johnson was 18th, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was 25th and Danica Patrick qualified 35th.
