In aftermath of Ray Rice incident, people share #WhyIStayed on Twitter

For most of Monday, trending topics on Twitter were specifically about Ray Rice or the National Football League.

Rice, the former Baltimore Ravens running back who was cut by the team and suspended indefinitely by the NFL, was the prime topic on most newscasts and social media talks.

By Monday night, the focus had shifted dramatically.

Both women and men took to Twitter to explain to an audience of strangers why they either left an abusive partner, or why they stayed with an abusive partner. #WhyIStayed and #WhyILeft began to trend in the U.S.

With raw emotion in one tweet after another, the topic of domestic violence eclipsed one person or one sport.
