Rob Bironas, a former kicker for the Tennessee Titans, was killed Saturday night in a single-vehicle accident in Nashville.

According to police, Bironas, 36, was traveling at a high rate of speed in his SUV when he lost control on a curve, went off the road and crashed into some trees.

The Titans released Bironas in March after nine seasons with the team. They released a statement Sunday, saying:

“We are deeply saddened to hear the tragic news from last night about Rob Bironas. Rob made a significant impact as a player in his nine years with the team and more importantly touched many lives in the Nashville community off the field.”

Bironas had just gotten married in June to Rachel Bradshaw, daughter of Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw.

Bironas is the franchise’s second all-time leading scorer with 1,032 points, just behind Al Del Greco (1,090). He is in fourth place on the list of most accurate field-goal kickers of all time, making 85.7% of his attempts (239 of 279).
