UCLA football: Devin Fuller shows his quarterback skills against Utah

Devin Fuller came to UCLA to be a quarterback, then saw his best career path was as a receiver.

On Thursday night against Utah, Fuller got to relive his quarterback days.

The Bruins had the ball at the seven-yard line and snapped directly to running back Jordon James, who ran left. He flipped the ball to Fuller, who went left and tossed a touchdown pass to quarterback Brett Hundley to tie the score, 14-14.

The Bruins won, 34-27.

“The officials always come in before the game to ask about any trick plays,” Coach Jim Mora said. “I said, ‘We got one, but I don’t think we’ll use it.’ Then [offensive coordinator] Noel [Mazzone] dialed it up and it works. Shows what I know about offense.”

It moved Hundley up UCLA’s all-time touchdown list for quarterbacks. He is eighth with 12, two behind Mark Harmon.

“I never caught a touchdown pass before,” said Hundley, who briefly played receiver at Chandler (Ariz.) High. “That was fun.”

Fuller did pretty well at his normal job, finishing with four receptions for 32 yards. He had a big six-yard reception on a third-and-four play during a fourth-quarter field goal drive that gave UCLA a 27-24 lead.

Fuller now leads the team with 16 receptions for 167 yards.
