MLS trio added to U.S. team for final World Cup qualifiers

U.S. national team Coach Juergen Klinsmann added a trio of Major League Soccer players to the roster for World Cup qualifiers with Jamaica and Panama.

Joining the team Thursday in Kansas City were midfielder Brad Davis of the Houston Dynamo as well as defender Clarence Goodson and forward Chris Wondolowski of the San Jose Earthquakes.

All have seen significant action for the U.S. team this year, with Davis appearing in six matches, including three qualifiers. Goodson, the most veteran of the three, has 43 caps with the national team while Wondolowski scored five goals in helping the Americans breeze unbeaten through July’s Gold Cup tournament.

Wondolowski joins the team as a replacement for prolific forward Eddie Johnson of the Seattle Sounders. Johnson strained his left groin during a workout Wednesday and will undergo an MRI exam.

Davis, Goodson and Wondolowski played for their MLS teams on Wednesday, which likely delayed their call up to the national team. The Earthquakes and Dynamo are idle this weekend.

The U.S., which has already qualified for next summer’s World Cup in Brazil, leads its six-nation qualifying group. It will finish the 10-match regional qualifying tournament by playing host to winless Jamaica on Friday in Kansas City before meeting Panama in Central America on Oct. 15.
