USC loses No.1 spot in latest Associated Press poll

What does a 39-point win on a Saturday get you on a Tuesday?

Answer: dropped from No.1 in the Associated Press college football poll.

Well, it was fun while it lasted.

USC’s 49-10 blowout win over Hawaii on Saturday in the Coliseum was not enough for the Trojans to hold their preseason spot atop the AP poll.

Alabama is the new No.1 this week after its impressive 41-14 win over Michigan. The AP poll was released Tuesday because of games played through Labor Day weekend.

USC fell to No. 2, followed by LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma, Florida State, Georgia and Arkansas. Rounding out the top 10 is South Carolina and West Virginia.

Aren’t early-season polls a hoot? Alabama, the defending BCS champions, certainly played like a No.1 against Michigan. It’s also true these same AP voters may have overrated Michigan at preseason No. 8.

The AP poll is no longer part of the BCS formula but still crowns an independent champion. USC won the AP title in 2003 even though LSU captured the BCS trophy. USC also won in 2004 and was allowed to keep its AP title even though the Trojans were stripped of the BCS trophy because of NCAA sanctions.
