Baseball: Former Bishop Amat pitcher David Berg continues his success at UCLA
It’s going to be a long time before someone comes along to equal the success story of David Berg, the former Bishop Amat pitcher and A student who walked on at UCLA and became one of the college baseball’s best relief pitchers with his sidearm delivery.
Berg, now a junior, has picked up where he left off last season after helping the Bruins win a national championship. In three games, he hasn’t allowed any runs while allowing one hit in 6 1/3 innings.
Every save he gets he increases his own school record. It’s up to 26 saves and counting in his career.
The most intriguing story will come in June, when we get to see which major-league team will choose him in the draft. He seems the ideal candidate to be a setup man but major-league baseball likes pitchers who throw in the high 90s for their bullpen.
But all Berg does is get batters out, and he loves pressure. Those seem to be qualities much in demand in the major leagues.
