Football: Long Beach Poly upsets Centennial, 35-28

Long Beach Poly safety Iman Marshall knocked the ball away from Centennial wide receiver Javon McKinley near midfield on fourth down with one minute remaining to clinch the Jackrabbits’ 35-28 upset at Mission Viejo High.

John “Juju” Smith scored two 14-yard touchdowns for Poly--one rushing and one receiving--and Tai Tiedemann’s one-yard quarterback sneak with 1:53 left was the winning score.

James Brooks ran for 141 yards in 16 carries and Smith had 58 yards in 12 carries and caught four passes for 84 yards for Poly, ranked 11th in the Southland by The Times. Josh Love also threw a touchdown pass and scored on a one-yard run for the reigning Southern Section Pac-5 Division champion Jackrabbits (2-1).

Eric Locklin caught two touchdown passes for #2 Corona Centennial, the reigning Inland Division champion. Robert Webber threw for 203 yards and three touchdowns for the Huskies (2-1), who led 28-21 after three quarters.

Tre Watson, who rushed for 466 yards and seven touchdowns against Ventura St. Bonaventure last week, was limited to 49 yards in 23 carries, including a five-yard score.
