Girls’ basketball: Chaminade wins first state championship

Chaminade may have been playing in its first state final, but the Eagles made it look old hat Saturday afternoon at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento.

Devin Stanback had 27 points and 10 rebounds as Chaminade set a state Division II record for points scored in an 80-51 blowout of five-time state winner Archbishop Mitty.

Natalie Valenzuela and Valerie Higgins each added 15 points and Kaylie Fandino had 12 points, six rebounds and two blocks as the Eagles (29-4) scored the first eight points and took a commanding 46-21 lead at halftime.

Chaminade, which lost to Long Beach Poly in the Southern Section Open Division quarterfinals, was 6 of 10 from three-point range, had seven blocks and out-rebounded the Monarchs 42-27.

Kelli Hayes had 15 points and Madeline Holland added 11 for Archbishop Mitty (20-12), which made only three of 23 three-pointers and made 20 of 63 field goal attempts. Chaminade won the Southern Section Division 3A title last season but lost to Mission League rival Alemany in the Southern California Regional Division III final.

Chaminade became the first school to win state championships in football and boys and girls basketball in the same year. The Eagles’ football team won the Division II state bowl game with a 41-9 victory over Enterprise in December and the boys basketball team beat Sir Francis Drake to win the Division III crown Friday.
