Oscar foreign language submissions set a record -- again

A record 83 countries submitted movies for consideration in the foreign language film category for the 87th Academy Awards, the film academy announced Thursday, marking the third consecutive year the field has set a new high. Last year, 76 countries qualified for entry. In 2011, 71 films were eligible. And with anywhere from 189 to 196 independent countries in the world (the exact number is open to debate, a discussion best left elsewhere), the academy still has room to grow.
