AAC Football Notebook: East Carolina's QB Switch

With record-setting quarterback Shane Carden gone, East Carolina has a considerable hole to fill. Training camp began with an open competition for the starting job. On Aug. 19, sophomore Kurt Benkert was named the starter over juniors Blake Kemp and Cody Keith. For a program on the rise — ECU is 26-13 with three bowl appearances the past three years — the selection of the sophomore to lead the offense was significant. But six days later, coach Ruffin McNeill and his staff were left scrambling. Benkert tore the ACL in right knee in a non-contact drill and is lost for the season.
