The Kingdom Day Parade always started with Larry E. Grant cruising down a boulevard in South Los Angeles with a procession of colorful floats, marching bands and dance troupes trailing behind. Grant traveled the three-mile route on the back of a convertible, waving at the throng of spectators who lined the streets to celebrate the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the slain civil rights leader. Then Grant would hop out of the car and climb into the bleachers to watch the rest of the parade. But he never stayed there long.
