Kids traveling for spring break or any time will now get a break from Amtrak.

The passenger rail service launched a student discount ticket nationwide that takes 15% off the cheapest value fare starting right now.

The deal: To get the discount, you have to reserve at least three days in advance through the main Amtrak.com website. Also, students must be between the ages of 17 and 25, and present a valid student ID on board the train.

Added extras: Like all passengers, students will find electrical outlets on each seat and free Wi-Fi available on many routes. Also, they’ll be able to take along two bags and two carry-ons for free.

Amtrak also takes bicycles as checked luggage. On some routes there’s no charge; on others, up to $20 per bicycle. Reservations are required, and bicycle spaces book up quickly.

When: The deal is good indefinitely, based on availability.

Tested: I checked upcoming weekends in March and April and found availability for student fares. For example, I found fares between downtown L.A. and Santa Barbara for as little as $20.40 instead of $24 each way.

Students also can sign up for Amtrak Guest Rewards to earn miles during their travels.
