The Hawaii International Film Festival, which includes various genres from 45 countries, returns to Oahu beginning Friday with the U.S. premiere of the true story of a group of Japanese-Canadian kids who formed a baseball team a century ago in Vancouver.

The festival will continue through Nov. 9 before heading to two more islands.

“The Vancouver Asahi” opens with the story of a team that went on to win numerous championships until the lives of its members changed after the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

The film, which is to be released in December in Japan, features a cast including some of that country’s best-known actors.

Closing night will feature the world premiere of “Visions in the Dark: The Life of Pinky Thompson.” It profiles the life of Myron “Pinky” Thompson, who, a news release says, “fought hard against the stigma of an inferior native Hawaiian.”

Thompson, who died in 2001, fought in World War II and went on to become a champion of education, healthcare and native culture on Oahu.

The movies will be screened at various cinemas in the Honolulu area. The festival’s website contains details of the various films, as well as the full schedule of events. Tickets, which cost $12 per movie, are also available online.

A limited lineup of movies will be screened as the festival moves to Kauai and the Big Island Nov. 13-19.

More details are available at the festival box office: (808) 447-0577.
