COLORADO

40th annual Flauschink

Crested Butte shakes off winter with a longtime event that’s the flip side to its annual fall harvest fest. On April 9, a slide show and Flauschink tale will be presented. A king and queen are crowned at a ball April 11, with dancing to live polka music. The royal pair is featured in a parade on April 12 along Elk Avenue. On April 13, the festival and ski season draw to a close at Crested Butte Mountain Resort.

When, where: April 9 to 13 at various locations.

Cost: Slide show and story $6; coronation ball $7; resort lift ticket $79, $59 ages 13 to 17, $40 ages 7 to 12.

HAWAII

Big Island Film Festival

Among this year’s featured reels: “Two Tickets to Paradise,” directed by and starring D.B. Sweeney; “Greetings From the Shore,” with Paul Sorvino; and “Crazy,” by Rick Bieber, the story of guitarist Hank Garland. There will be indoor and outdoor screenings, panel discussions and an awards brunch honoring participating filmmakers and actors. “Best in the Fest” includes a screening of the audience’s favorite feature and short films.

ILLINOIS

Chicago Blues Festival

The Midwest blues extravaganza turns 25 this year. Among performers is Johnny Winter, whose last appearance there was the inaugural fest in 1984. James Cotton, Buckwheat Zydeco and B.B. King also top the lineup, which includes 90 performances on six stages at Grant Park.

When, where: June 5 to 8 at the park, at Jackson Boulevard and Columbus Drive.

SOUTH CAROLINA

Spoleto Festival USA

Charleston’s summer blowout includes a new production of “Le Cenerentola,” Gioachino Rossini’s rendition of the Cinderella tale; the U.S. premiere of the stage production “Monkey: Journey to the West”; performances by the innovative Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève; and Dutch theater-ensemble Hotel Modern’s “The Great War,” described as a live animation film. Plus many more dance, music and theater offerings, workshops and panels.

When, where: May 23 to June 8 at various locations in Charleston.
