Now we know what Cal State Northridge meant when it announced last night that top scorerDeon Tresvant had missed a Big West Conference game against UC Davis for ‘personal reasons.’

It’s just a little more vague than, ‘He’s been arrested.’

The L.A. County district attorney’s office announced today that Tresvant and three others have been charged in connection with a burglary at a Porter Ranch Best Buy on New Year’s Day.

One of the others: Jeffrey Braswell, the 22-year-old son of Northridge Coach Bobby Braswell.

According to police, Braswell, who works at the Best Buy, allegedly logged onto a cash register using the password of an employee who not working that day. He then allowed three friends -- identified as Tresvant, 23, Phannuel Gbewonyo, 28, and Dallas Rutherford, 19 -- to check out merchandise without paying.

Jeffrey Braswell has been charged with one count of second-degree commercial burglary and three counts of grand theft over $400. He is scheduled for arraignment in San Fernando Superior Court this afternoon. Tresvant and the two others are charged with one count each of second-degree commercial burglary and grand theft over $400. They are scheduled for arraignment Jan. 26.

Tresvant, a 6-foot senior guard from Long Beach, leads Northridge with an average of 13.3 points a game.

Former Times staff writer Robyn Norwood will have updates on this story, as she takes a new role covering local colleges this basketball season. Stay tuned to latimes.com/sports.
