Compton put on a late frantic rush to survive a 10-point first-half deficit and beat Harvard-Westlake, 80-76, in the Ocean View tournament’s fifth-place semifinals Friday night. Demar DeRozen had 38 points, going 11 for 13 from the line, for Compton (2-1), The Times’ No. 5 team in the preseason. Renaldo Woolridge had 25 points, including five three-pointers, for No. 15 Harvard-Westlake (6-2) in a game played at Ocean View.

Gahr’s biggest game of the season turned into its biggest disappointment as No. 4-ranked Mater Dei beat the No. 8 Gladiators, 93-79, in the championship semifinals of the Sonora tournament. Travis Wear’s 25 points and 21 rebounds and David Wear’s 22 points and 13 rebounds sparked Mater Dei (8-0). Casper Ware scored 28 and Chester Woolen addded 19 for Gahr (7-2), which failed to score at least 80 points for the first time this season.
