Say what you want about the selection process for the state championship bowl games, but four games into its history, there have been three pretty good games.

St. Bonaventure was supposed to roll over Central Catholic. The Seraphs are ranked No. 7 in the state, and Central Catholic isn’t among the top 25. Yet, the score was tied, 14-14, to begin the fourth quarter.

No, it wasn’t a nail-biter, with St. Bonaventure pulling away for a 35-21 victory, but it wasn’t bad either. It was certainly competitive. And that’s the most important thing.

If these games were blowouts, people would quickly lose interest and the games would be cast as failures. That’s important since CIF section commissioners will vote next month whether to continue the series between Northern and Southern California schools.
