No scoring in the third quarter of the Division III state bowl game between Modesto Central Catholic and St. Bonaventure, but both teams moved the ball well.

Central Catholic put together a nice drive to start the second half, moving the ball into St. Bonny territory behind some nice runs by Louis Bland. However, on fourth and three at the Seraph 26-yard line, Loren Powers sacked Central Catholic quarterback Dylan Swartz.

Bland also came up big on Central Catholic’s first defensive series.

Nolan Rodarte’s third-down reception kept St. Bonny’s opening drive alive after Bland’s first tackle for a loss. Darrell Scott then ran 25 yards to the Central Catholic 21. Bland followed with his second tackle for a loss by snuffing out a reverse, Rodarte then dropped a sure first-down pass to leave the Seraphs with third and long. Central Catholic defensive back James Orth then stepped in front of a post pattern and intercepted the pass from Casey Serna at the goal line, ending St. Bonny’s threat with 3:41 left in the third quarter.

Orth came up big on Central Catholic’s second offensive series, snaring a 29-yard pass on third-and-seven to put the ball at midfield. Bland was stopped shot on third and one, so the Raiders are facing a key fourth-down situation at the St. Bonny 40-yard line to start the fourth quarter.
