American history has oodles of lengendary generals. Let’s name some -- Washington, Grant and Patton.

Well, in baseball, there are currently a few five-star generals -- Jeter, J-Roll and Reyes. Yes, all shortstops. That’s often your highest-ranking position, you could say, and that’s exactly how West Torrance Coach Juan Cueva dubbed senior shortstop Aaron Deguire.

‘He’s my field general,’ Cueva said of Deguire. ‘He helps set the tone for younger guys and to get everybody to buy into the philosophy of ‘Whatever it takes.’’

And that philosophy is a big reason why the Warriors are 9-2, on a four-game winning streak and ranked No. 19 by The Times heading into their nonleague game tomorrow/Thursday against visiting Newport Harbor at 3:15 p.m.
