Even though he inked a scholarship offer from Florida State University last fall, that didn’t stop Rancho Verde‘s Michael Snaer from having an impressive senior season.

And his efforts were further rewarded today: He was named the 2008-09 Gatorade California boys basketball player of year.

Snaer, who was already named to the McDonald’s All-American team last month, averaged 28.1 points per game along with 10.8 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 3.6 steals and 2.2 blocks per game. In addition, he guided the Mustangs to the Inland Valley League title and helped them reach the Southern Section Division I-AA quarterfinals.

Still, Snaer is more than just a court junkie. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound shooting guard has a 3.24 grade-point average and has volunteered for programs that aim to keep high schoolers safe and sober during prom.

‘Snaer has a chance to really be something special,’ said Elvert Perry, head coach of Team Inland Reebok of the Amateur Athletic Union, in a news release.

With the honor, Snaer becomes a finalist for the Gatorade national boys basketball player of the year, which will be announced later this month.

Oh, and here are some of Snaer’s best YouTube moments:
