Countywide : 17 Named as Winners of Merit Scholarships
Seventeen Orange County high school students were named Monday as winners of $2,000 scholarships and the title of National Merit Scholar in the nationwide program.
The winners joined 12 other Orange County students named earlier this month to receive between $2,000 and $8,000 each from the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Nationally, 3,250 students have been chosen so far this year to receive the corporate-sponsored scholarships for undergraduate study at colleges of their choice. A third and final group of about 2,450 scholarship recipients will be named later this year.
The students were selected from more than 1 million of their peers who entered the competition. More than 600 sponsors help finance the nonprofit corporation.
