Journalist Bob Woodward, who wrote a biography of John Belushi, may not be subpoenaed to appear at a hearing for the woman charged with the actor’s murder, Superior Court Judge Joseph Hannon ruled in Washington, D.C. Lawyers representing Cathy Evelyn Smith, 38, had obtained a certificate from a Los Angeles Superior Court judge asking a District of Columbia court to compel Woodward to appear at the May 7 preliminary hearing in Los Angeles. The subpoena sought Woodward’s unpublished notes and other source material that he used to write his controversial book “Wired: The Short Life and Fast Times of John Belushi.” Hannon said it had not been shown before his court that Woodward was a material and necessary witness.
