Fashion Figure Nipon Jailed

PHILADELPHIA —
Albert Nipon, head of a $60-million women’s fashion empire, was sentenced today to three years in jail for bribing Internal Revenue Service agents to avoid payment of more than $1.5 million in personal and corporate income taxes.
U.S. District Judge Raymond Broderick, in imposing the jail term but no fine, said he felt “compassion” for the 57-year-old businessman but he believes Nipon can survive incarceration “and become a greater man for it.”
