A19-year-old Encino man was killed but his 17-year-old girlfriend escaped with minor injuries Tuesday night when their four-wheel-drive vehicle tumbled 185 feet down a mountain slope south of Woodland Hills, Los Angeles police said.

Jerry John Trevino died after being thrown from the vehicle as it rolled into a ravine off Santa Maria Road, police said.

Michelle Corey of Woodland Hills was held in by a seat belt and escaped serious injury, officer Richard Dehemmer said.

The 8 p.m. accident occurred as Trevino attempted to drive up an approximately 50-degree slope, Dehemmer said. The road is near a dirt stretch of Mulholland Drive, about a mile east of Canoga Avenue.

The girlfriend freed herself and flagged down a passing motorist, who called paramedics.

Paramedics pronounced Trevino dead at the scene and sent the girl to a nearby hospital, where she was treated, investigators said.
