A Los Angeles County Jail inmate was charged Wednesday with the Feb. 17 robbery and fatal shooting of a Westminster motel owner, police said.

Investigators Wednesday morning served an arrest warrant at the jail charging Kevin Phillips, 24, of Los Angeles with robbery, burglary and the murder of Robert Luther Thompson, Westminster Police Officer Larry Woessner said.

Thompson, the 59-year-old owner of a Motel 6 at 6266 Westminster Ave., was shot four times in the upper body at the inn the night of Feb. 17.

Phillips is awaiting trial in connection with a number of Los Angeles County robberies, Woessner said.

Investigators linked Phillips to the slaying with evidence found at the motel and by matching the similarities between the Motel 6 robbery and those in Los Angeles, Woessner said.
