Pleasanton teachers struck for the first time, but there was disagreement as to whether the action affected the education of more than 4,000 youngsters. Dozens of substitute teachers greeted the students, and attendance was reported at 86%. The teachers began their one-day walkout immediately after the school board unanimously approved a contract that Jerri Long, spokeswoman for the Pleasanton District, called the district’s “last, best and final offer.” The proposed contract gave the teachers a 3% raise retroactive to July 1 and a one-time 1% bonus. Negotiators for the teachers had asked for a 9.75% raise and a fact-finder had recommended 5%.
