Panel Stands Pat : Hope Fades for Renamed Airport

Share

There is no hope for Bob Hope Airport.

Airport commissioners Monday refused to consider changing the name of the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport to Bob Hope Airport, even though everyone agrees the current name is too long.

Commissioner Leland Ayers said most people refer to it simply as Burbank Airport, “which best describes the location and the nature of the airport.” Ayers also contended that the airport, which previously was called Lockheed Airport and Hollywood-Burbank Airport, has “had enough name changes over the past years.”

John Harker, director of the Greater Burbank Visitors and Convention Bureau, had written to the commission saying more travelers would use the airport if it were renamed after the comedian. He said Hope deserves the honor because he films TV specials at NBC Studios in Burbank.

But Ayers said several other people, including flier Amelia Earhart, also deserve the honor.

A spokesman for Hope refused to comment.
