Twenty-four of Santa Barbara County’s 30 deputy district attorneys staged a “sickout” for the second straight day to protest stalled contract negotiations. The prosecutors’ one-year pact with the county expired recently. The two sides have been negotiating since March, said Steve Schinnerer, county personnel director. The prosecutors’ current pay ranges from about $25,000 to $48,000 a year. Management and rookie prosecutors are taking over the caseload, said Dist. Atty. Thomas Sneddon. “We’ve absolutely been able to handle all the cases,” Sneddon said. “We had one felony trial going and the verdict came in today.” Sneddon said that he was unaware how much longer the prosecutors would continue to call in sick.
