Services were held Wednesday at the Greek Evangelical Church for Theodore E. Kalem, Time magazine’s drama critic since 1961.

Kalem, who died last week in a New York City hospital, had been ill with throat cancer. He was 65.

Known as T. E. Kalem, he grew up in Malden, graduated from Harvard University in 1942 and was a former book reviewer for the Christian Science Monitor.

Twice elected president of the New York Drama Critic’s Circle, Kalem never conceded that films would be a substitute for live theater.

“A 2,500-year-old baby doesn’t die,” he said. “Here is an art people haven’t been able to do without.”
