There were 49 AIDS-related deaths in San Francisco last month, more than double the 23 deaths recorded during the same period last year and the city’s highest mortality rate for the usually fatal acquired immune deficiency syndrome during a single month, the city’s Department of Public Health reported. The department’s AIDS Activities Office also reported 54 newly diagnosed cases of the disease during June, a slight drop from the May figure of 67. The diagnosis rate reached its peak in March, when 70 cases were recorded. Thirty-three cases of AIDS were diagnosed during the month of June last year, the figures showed.
