El Camino Student Wins Four Gold Medals at Games for Deaf

Charles Smith, a student last spring at El Camino College, won gold medals in four track events at the World Games for the Deaf held in Los Angeles during the past two weeks.

Competing at UCLA’s Drake Stadium, Smith, 19, set a Games for the Deaf record in the long jump at 7.40 meters. He also won gold medals in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.86 seconds and in the 200-meter dash, clocking in at 22.07 seconds.

As part of the 400-meter relay team, whose winning time was 41.91 seconds, Smith added a fourth gold medal to his collection.

The U.S. track team won a total of 21 gold medals in the international competition, which ended Saturday. That put them well ahead of the other 24 nations competing in track and field. The team representing Germany was second with four gold medals and France came in third with three.
