The foremast of the Constitution, shattered by Hurricane Gloria, is being replaced with one cut from a 59-foot Douglas fir flown in from Washington state, the skipper said Tuesday.

“We located a replacement stick out near Seattle,” said Cmdr. Joseph Brown, captain of the ship known as “Old Ironsides.” The 44-gun frigate was launched in 1797 and is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat.
