A man who registered at Palo Alto High School under an assumed name and proved to be a talented cross-country runner was identified by police as 26-year-old James Arthur Hogue. Sgt. Judy Dunn said Hogue used the name Jay Mitchell Huntsman and told school officials he was 16 years old when he registered for classes Sept. 10. Hogue used the name of a San Diego child who died as an infant, police said. Dunn said school officials asked for police assistance in identifying Hogue because he said he had no legal guardian. As Hogue waited for school officials to rule on his attendance, he ran and won the Stanford Invitational High School Cross Country Meet. Hogue spent a brief time in Juvenile Hall, but he now is “out and about,” Dunn said. “The case remains at the district attorney’s office,” she said. “No determination has been made yet as to whether criminal charges are appropriate.”
