COLLEGE FOOTBALL RECRUITING : Junior Colleges : Early Signings of Top Players Ruin Suspense

Share

The junior college football signing day came and went Wednesday with barely anyone noticing.

Most players apparently followed the example set by Saddleback College quarterback Jason Schmid and signed early.

After leading the Gauchos to an 11-0 record, and being named the state community college player of the year, Schmid signed with USC. By signing in early January, Schmid became eligible to participate in spring drills.

Schmid was one of three community college players going to USC. Also signing with the Trojans are John Katnik, a 6-foot 2-inch, 250-pound center from Pac-9 champion Fullerton, and Bill Stokes, a 6-3, 220-pound linebacker from Glendale.

Other Pacific 10 school signings included linebackers Peter Carter (Fullerton) and Rich Zumwalt (Golden West) with Arizona State. Cal signed offensive guard Scott Anderson (Fullerton) and punter Scott Taber (Santa Rosa).

Leron Phillips (Orange Coast) and running back Reggie Nettles (Cerritos) signed with Oregon.
