Local News in Brief : Mild Quake Shakes Santa Clarita Valley
Amild earthquake centered near Forest Park, 10 miles north of San Fernando, shook the Santa Clarita Valley late Thursday, but there were no reports of injuries or damages, authorities said Friday.
California Institute of Technology seismologists said the temblor occurred at 10:44 p.m. and registered 3.3 on the Richter scale.
Caltech spokesman Dennis Meredith said the quake was felt by in the Canyon Country area, but Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said it was not felt at their station, 18 miles from Canyon Country.
Meredith said the quake had no connection to recent tremors in Palm Springs, Oceanside and Bishop in the San Joaquin Valley.
There have been five California earthquakes in July measuring more than 5 points on the Richter scale.
A temblor July 8 in Palm Springs, registering 5.9, was followed July 13 by a 5.3 earthquake off the coast of Oceanside in San Diego County. There have been three tremors near Bishop in the San Joaquin Valley, a 5.5 quake on July 20 and two quakes on July 21, registering 6.1 and 5.2.
