Lumber Workers Accept Wage Cuts
Members of one of two unions representing 7,500 striking Weyerhaeuser employees voted to accept wage and benefit cuts proposed by the timber company, the union and a federal mediator said Friday.
About 6,500 members of the International Woodworkers of America voted by a margin of more than 2 to 1 to ratify the offer, according to union leaders and federal mediator Norman Lee.
One thousand other striking Weyerhaeuser employees are members of the Lumber, Production and Industrial Workers union and have not voted on the contract offer. The unions, which have members in Washington and Oregon, went on strike June 16.
Under the contract approved by the IWA, the workers will get a profit-sharing plan in exchange for a $4-an-hour cut in wages and benefits.
