Anaheim : Barricaded Man Shoots at Houses, Parked Cars
A man barricaded in a home was shooting a gun at parked cars, houses and other random targets late Sunday after he temporarily held his mother hostage, police said. The man remained barricaded in the house late Sunday night.
No injuries have been reported.
Police said Frank Benjamin Kovaletz, who has a history of mental problems, began acting strangely about 3 p.m. Sunday when police were summoned, said Officer Jeff Berns.
Police were talking to the suspect by telephone late Sunday, hoping to persuade him to surrender.
The suspect’s mother, whose identity was not immediately available, was released about 7:15 p.m. According to police, the suspect did not threaten his mother.
A special weapons team helped evacuate several homes in the 1800 block of Tedmar Avenue after police learned that the suspect had a .22-caliber gun and 500 rounds of ammunition, police said.
No motive was given for the man’s actions.
About a dozen residents were evacuated to nearby churches, police said.
